New Covid Variant Eris Spreading In Maharashtra, Know Symptoms

New Covid variant Eris: We have previously witnessed the devastation caused by several COVID variations. And now it’s known that Eris, another Covid version, has joined. Omicron EG.5.1, a novel SARS-CoV-2 mutant, is another name for the variant Eris.

Ever since this new variant has emerged, it created a sort of panic. As per a report from the US and the UK, this new Covid variant has all the powers to increase new infections.

The new mutant virus was categorized by WHO (World Health Organization) as a kind of “variant under monitoring” in July.

The variant in India has been reported at many places like Pune and Bengaluru. And now, a researcher with the SARS-CoV-2 genomics consortium INSACOG has clarified that no clusters have been discovered thus far. Please go through this document to know more about New Covid variant Eris.

What is new Covid variant Eris?

Eris, a new Covid version, is sometimes referred to as Omicron EG.5.1. It is recognized as the infectious substrain of Omicron XBB. The additional mutations on the spike proteins are what make it harmful.

The INSACOG researcher previously said that this new strain is 20–45% more contagious than XBB.EG.5.1.

Despite everything said above, there hasn’t been much worry about this strain so far. The National Center for Disease Control (NCDC) reports that it has already kept track of the novel virus’s genetic makeup and clinical symptoms.

First Case of New Covid variant Eris detected in India

It was on March 24, 2023 when the EG.5.1 variant was first discovered. The first case of this mutant was traced in Maharashtra on May 29, 2023.

Dr. Karyakarte, who’s the state coordinator for genome sequencing became successful to detect this Covid variant for the first time in India.

He detected the variant in Covid-positive RT-PCR samples and continued to find more information.

How contagion-prone is the strain?

As per the official figures, the variant is currently growing at a very fast pace having a weekly growth rate of 20.51%.

Looking at its dangerous transformation, W.H.O is constantly monitoring Omicron EG.5.1 symptoms. The organization is also looking forward to clarify its severity.

As per Dr. Karyakarte, there has been no proof Omicron EG.5.1 will cause severe illness and other serious concerns.

Symptoms of New Covid variant Eris

  • Sore throat
  • Sneezing
  • Fatigue (mild or severe)
  • Headache
  • Runny nose

As far as this strain is concerned, there is not much difference between Covid strains and Omicron. And so, the reason of recent increase in the disease may be because of the low protection levels and prior immunization and infection rates.

Apart from India, there have been reports of Eris infection in some other parts of the world including Japan, and some parts of Asia, and Europe. Out of the above, Japan is the country showing an upsurge in cases, which is quite concerning.

Further, it is known that Eris variant has a growth advantage of 20% as compared to previous strains. It simply means that Eris can spread faster as compared to Omicron strains.

To remain safe, you can always have a look at the precautions. One safety measure will be to wear a mask, especially when have any upper respiratory infection symptoms.

Precautions to be taken to prevent contracting COVID

According to an expert, maintaining good cleanliness, a balanced diet, and a healthy lifestyle are the top 3 things you should do to avoid the new Covid strain. Additionally, complete your scheduled vaccination regimen (if required).
