What is new Covid variant Eris?
Eris, a new Covid version, is sometimes referred to as Omicron EG.5.1. It is recognized as the infectious substrain of Omicron XBB. The additional mutations on the spike proteins are what make it harmful.
The INSACOG researcher previously said that this new strain is 20–45% more contagious than XBB.EG.5.1.
Despite everything said above, there hasn’t been much worry about this strain so far. The National Center for Disease Control (NCDC) reports that it has already kept track of the novel virus’s genetic makeup and clinical symptoms.

First Case of New Covid variant Eris detected in India
It was on March 24, 2023 when the EG.5.1 variant was first discovered. The first case of this mutant was traced in Maharashtra on May 29, 2023.
Dr. Karyakarte, who’s the state coordinator for genome sequencing became successful to detect this Covid variant for the first time in India.
He detected the variant in Covid-positive RT-PCR samples and continued to find more information.
How contagion-prone is the strain?
As per the official figures, the variant is currently growing at a very fast pace having a weekly growth rate of 20.51%.
Looking at its dangerous transformation, W.H.O is constantly monitoring Omicron EG.5.1 symptoms. The organization is also looking forward to clarify its severity.
As per Dr. Karyakarte, there has been no proof Omicron EG.5.1 will cause severe illness and other serious concerns.

Further, it is known that Eris variant has a growth advantage of 20% as compared to previous strains. It simply means that Eris can spread faster as compared to Omicron strains.
